How it works
Enter your average video length, total views, and average retention (the percentage of each video people actually watch — YouTube Studio shows this under Engagement). The calculator estimates your total watch hours, your progress toward the 4,000-hour Partner Program threshold, and how many views you still need.
The monetization requirements
To join the YouTube Partner Program for full monetization you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Only public, long-form videos count toward the 4,000 hours — Shorts, private, deleted and members-only videos don't.
How to grow watch time faster
Watch time is views × how long people stay, so both levers matter. Longer videos only help if retention holds — a 20-minute video watched 30% beats a 40-minute video watched 12%. The biggest wins usually come from stronger openings (most drop-off happens in the first 30 seconds) and playlists that chain related videos together.
Frequently asked questions
How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?+
It depends on video length and retention. If viewers average 4 minutes watched per view, you need about 60,000 views. The calculator above does this math for your exact numbers.
Do Shorts count toward 4,000 watch hours?+
No. Shorts watch time is excluded from the 4,000-hour requirement — Shorts have their own path: 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days.
Does watch time expire?+
The requirement is rolling: YouTube counts watch hours from the last 365 days. Old watch time beyond that window stops counting, so consistent publishing matters.
Where do I see my real watch time?+
YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview shows exact watch hours, and the Monetization tab shows official progress toward the thresholds. This calculator is for planning and what-if scenarios.
